My first experience with a cetacean in the wild was at a sea wall in St. Petersburg, Fl. I encountered two females and a calf feeding along the wall. From the way they sped into the safety of shallow waters, they may have been eluding one of the many sharks in Tampa bay. I observed them trapping various fish against the wall, one female always remained close to the calf of course. In an attempt to get a closer look at these majestic mammals, I began tapping on the sea wall. As I had hoped, they responded to the vibrations and became very curious. They swam elegantly back and forth against the sea wall showcasing their streamlined bodies. As the sun neared the horizon, the dolphins began to slowly swim out into the bay. I sat and watched their dorsal fins disappear into the sunset. That single experience has fueled my love for cetaceans even more.
