Beat Planet ~ Wayne Woodgate
Interview with Wayne Woodgate by Wanda Boudreaux

Wanda Boudreaux: Is The Wretched the name of your band? W: No, i don't have a band as yet (i'm not that talented). The wretched is one of my favorite Nine Inch Nails songs. WB: What is your main instrument?
W: My computer at the moment, i'm learning guitar but i play badly. I wanted to play guitar since i was 8 but only in the last few years have i had the money to pursue it, my family has always been quite poor.

WB: Do you play any other instruments?
W: I can play drums (badly), i play guitar (badly) heh heh my computer allows me to do something better. i'm game for learning any instrument.

WB: When did you first start playing music?
W: About 6 years ago now, i started college and some friends and i downloaded a traker program off the internet and started fiddling. It was a craze but i seem to have stuck with it ...mainly because i enjoy it.

WB: Who are your musical influences?
W: NIN, Gary Numan, Korn, Faith No More, Altemark (i'll get you this guys website if you'd like, he's amazing), Aphex Twin, Atari Teenage Riot, Fear Factory, Prodigy and Pitchshifter and more recently Muse. I like older music too but none of that really shows in anything i do.

WB: This probably sounds like a trite, Tiger Beat type of question, but I get a lot of interesting answers from it so here goes: What is your favourite colour and why?
W: Blue, i have no real idea, it just always has been for as long as i can remember. Have you any idea's ?

WB: Now, let's get personal. What is your height?
W: 6 foot 3 inches, i'm kinda lanky

WB: Weight?
W: 10 stone 2 maybe 10.5 stone, i'll let you work out what that is in kilo's

WB: Eye colour?
W: Bluey grey with hazel flecks around the pupil. My girlfriend thinks they are great.

WB: Your poetry expresses pain over failed relationships, would you care to expand on the events that lead to you poetry as an outlet?
W: hmmm well its not really about failed relationships more about fear of failing in the only one i have ever had, yes i am just that sheltered (laughs). My girlfriend encouraged my poetry as it helped me express myself, i'm not always the most sharing of people. Most of it is about fear and self loathing, occaisionaly its just a passing idea which turns out really kool. Everclear was a bit of both. There is one thats very personal and which i don't really want to go into right now.

WB: Where do you live in England?
W: Lowestoft in suffolk, which is in east anglia which is quite literally the arse end of the uk. its not a bad little town and i'm about to move into a new flat closer to the sea......about 100 yards to be precise, so should i feel the need i can go for a walk anytime.

WB: I love the ocean. What a lovely view you must have. Sailing is also one of my favourite activities. Do you see sailing as a spiritual adventure?
W: Well my view outta my kitchen window will be of the houses out back *lol* but a 30 second walk and i'm on the beach which is beautiful....especially in storms. Sailing is kool, i don't know if i'd call it a spiritual adventure as i'm not that deep or interesting but it fits in with me. This sounds sad and totally jumping on a band wagon but its like i am Mr self destruct, when sailing i can test myself, how far will i go how hard will i push the boat whats the most radical move i can do and will it work ? i havent done it for a few years though....i miss it greatly.

WB: Do you kiss football? (laughs)
W: Do i kiss football ? what the fuck ? (laughing) i hate football, its a boys school game and thats where it should have stayed. I do however like basketball, and mountain biking (if i still had a bike). Sailing is probably my favourite sport though, you can fuck around and its so much fun, all you endanger is yourself.

WB: You are obviously putting a lot of effort into your relationship with your girlfriend. That is so sweet. It also makes you a very rare guy indeed. How did you come by this sensitivity?
W: Errrr.......reason's i might not wanna publish right now, but a very few close friends know. My g/f brought most of it out, it was all bottled up before and i used to do stupid shit to let it out and calm down.

WB: Where do you plan to go with your music?
W: hmm i wish i could be really interesting and say i know but i can't, i guess it'll go where i go, wherever life influences me. I'm largely influenced by my feelings at the time, what i listen too and what i have learnt musically. (currently, stick me in a studio and i could just about make you tea, but gimme a few hours and i can do kool shit....my music is the same...bit like my moods, its swings all over the place).

WB: Where would you like to go with your music?
W: I don't want to be famous, i wouldn't mind working on one maybe two tracks with a certain mr reznor and a few other people. I don't want any real fame, i think if i could get away with enjoying myself and helping people enjoy music i made and get away with not being known by my face i would be going for it full steam. I kinda like slipknot for that, they pretty much kept everything on their terms. So yeah i think my answer is "into the studio, and see what comes out."

Wanda Boudreaux: You are a frequent visitor to nin.com. What attracts you?
Wayne Woodgate: Some good people to chat to, if anyone gives you shit you can generally talk them round.....would be a kool thing to turn into a bar or something, you could go international.....not really trents bag though so maybe not, but people who listen to that kinda alternative music don't have many places to go around here or even in this country. And when i say people i mean people that listen and like because its them not people that listen and like because its in...really fucks me off. WB: What are your favourite NIN songs & why? WW: The wretched, it has kool lyrics and it just sounds awesome...it just pumps energy out and its infectious, even my older friends who don't like NIN go along with it :)

WB: Yes, I know what you mean. I've been quite surprised by the number of interesting folks I've met in NIN. It's not like any other chat room I've been in. Folks actually think for themselves. Has that been your experience too?
WW: Pretty much yeah, way less bullshit than the average chat hidey holes i used to frequent. Its all wysiwyg, and i like stuff like that but of course a little intrigue never goes a miss.

WB: If you were stranded on a dessert island, what three items would you wish for and why? (Didn't see that one coming, did ya?)
WW: Nothing studios with all instruments and personel :).....na seriously.......i'm not sure probably some tools weapons and building materials......you can get everything else from that.
